What causes blood in urine and when you should see your doctor

A Bristol-based expert is encouraging people to check their pee to potentially save their lives.

Ade Adeniyi, consultant urologist and medical director at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre, said: "For women, blood in the urine - haematuria - is most commonly seen as a sign of cystitis, an inflammation of the bladder usually caused by a bladder infection.

"Mild cases will often get better by themselves or with the aid of over the counter medication. However, some people may experience frequent and lasting episodes and they need to see their GP, as regular or long-term treatment may be necessary.

"Recurrent cystitis may develop into a more serious kidney infection, which can lead to permanent scarring of the kidney.

"Blood poisoning - septicaemia - can also follow untreated infections, as the kidneys filter waste from the blood and return the filtered blood to the rest of the body.

Hot drinks are the most common cause of burns to young children

The campaign to reduce burn injuries to young children has been led by research from the Children's Burns Research Centre. The centre, based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, is a collaboration between University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and the universities of Bristol, Cardiff and UWE Bristol.

SafeTea aims to reduce hot drink scalds to young children and promote burns first aid. The target audience is parents, grandparents and carers of children under five across the UK.

The key messages of the campaign are to:

- Keep hot drinks away from young children;
- First aid for burns is: COOL, CALL, COVER;
- Never carry a hot drink whilst carrying a baby;
- Never pass a hot drink over the heads of young children;
- Make a SafeTea zone: a safe place for hot drinks in your home, out of reach of small children.
